Paint & Ink Test – No. 567 RCI Type Drying Time Recorder

A Drying Time Recorder (often called a Drying Time Tester or Recorder) is an instrument used in the coatings, inks, and adhesives industries to objectively measure the various stages of the drying process of a liquid film as it cures ;

To eliminate subjectivity in the statement “the paint is dry.” It provides reproducible, numerical data on the drying profile of a coating, from initial set to final hard dry.

A Drying Time Recorder (also known as a Linear Drying Time Recorder) is a specialized instrument used in the coatings industry to measure the different stages of the drying and curing process of paints, varnishes, and adhesives ; The recorder typically uses a motorized arm that moves a needle (stylus) at a constant speed across a glass strip or metal plate coated with the test material. As the coating dries, the stylus leaves different types of marks in the film, which correspond to specific drying stages.

Types of Drying Time Recorders

1. Mechanical (Needle Track) Recorders (Most Common Type)

  • How it works : A motor slowly draws a coated panel under a set of needle stylus. The needles rest on the surface, making a continuous track.

  • What it measures: As the film dries, the character of the track changes.

Wet Stage: A solid, unbroken groove.

–>Tack-Free/Set-to-Touch: The needle starts to skip, leaving a dotted line.

–>Dry-through/Dry-hard: The needle no longer penetrates, leaving no mark or just a faint scratch.

–>Output: A physical paper chart with a timeline and the visual track pattern. Standards include ASTM D5895.

2. Pendulum Hardness Testers (e.g., König, Persoz)

While primarily for hardness, they can track drying by taking repeated measurements over time. The damping time of the pendulum’s swing decreases as the film hardens.

3. Weight Loss Recorders

Measure the evaporation of solvents by continuously weighing a wet sample. Useful for determining the “dust-free” time and following physical drying stages.

4. Automated Optical/Laser Devices

Use a laser or light beam to detect surface reflection or penetration. They can detect minute changes in surface viscosity or hardness without contact.

No.567 RCI Type Drying Time Recorder

This tester is used to evaluate the drying characteristics of paint.

Scratching the surface of the paint coated glass board with a steel needle, the operator is to check the orbit and measure the drying time.

Typical Drying Stages Measured

  • Set-to-Touch : When the surface feels dry but is easily damaged.

  • Dust-Free : When dust will not stick to the surface.

  • Tack-Free : When the film does not feel sticky to a light touch.

  • Dry-through (Dry-to-Touch) : When light pressure does not leave a fingerprint.

  • Dry-hard : When the film has reached its initial full hardness (can be tested with thumb twist or pencil hardness).

  • Recoat Time : When a subsequent coat can be applied without issues.

Applications & Industries

  • Paint & Coatings Manufacturers: R&D and QC for formulating and batch testing of architectural, industrial, automotive paints.

  • Printing Inks: Determining setting and curing times on paper, plastic, or metal.

  • Adhesives & Sealants: Testing the “skin-over” and curing time.

  • Construction: Timing for recoat of floor coatings, wall primers, etc.

  • Failure Analysis: Investigating why a coating failed (e.g., dirt inclusion, wrinkling) by comparing its drying profile to a standard.
