A Portable Turbidimeter is a handheld diagnostic tool used to measure the “cloudiness” or turbidity of a liquid. In the field, it is the primary way environmental scientists and water technicians determine if water is clean, contaminated, or effectively filtered.
A portable turbidimeter is a handheld, battery-operated instrument used to measure the turbidity of a liquid—essentially, how cloudy or hazy it is. Turbidity is caused by suspended particles like silt, clay, microorganisms, and organic matter that scatter and absorb light.

The standard unit of measurement is the Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU).

The 2100Q’s RST reading mode uses an exclusive algorithm that reverse calculates and continuously updates a calculated value of turbidity to a point in time when the sample begins to settle out of solution based upon the accumulated trend of the measured values. This results in values that are more accurate and repeatable than those obtained using traditional smoothing techniques, such as averaging.

Most modern portable turbidimeters use the nephelometric method defined by the US EPA. They have a light source (usually an LED) and a photodetector set at a 90-degree angle to the light path.

The instrument shines a beam of light into the water sample.
Suspended particles scatter the light.
The detector at 90° measures the intensity of this scattered light.
The more light scattered, the higher the turbidity reading.

Many advanced models also use ratiometric or multiple-detector technology (detectors at 90°, 180°, and other angles) to compensate for color absorption and varying particle sizes, improving accuracy across a wide range.
